How to Travel to Antarctica from Ushuaia?

Some journeys begin long before you step aboard a ship. Traveling to Antarctica begins in Ushuaia, at the southernmost tip of Tierra del Fuego, surrounded by mountains, the Beagle Channel, and a history deeply connected to exploration and adventure in the far south.
Known as the Gateway to Antarctica, Ushuaia is the main maritime departure point for Antarctic tourism. From its port, expedition ships cross the Drake Passage, also known as the Mar de Hoces, heading towards the Antarctic Peninsula, located approximately 1,000 km from Tierra del Fuego.
When is the best time to travel?
The Antarctic season generally runs from mid-October to early April, although most expeditions take place between November and February.
Each period of the season offers a different experience, with changes in landscapes, sea ice, and wildlife activity.
What is an Antarctic expedition like?
After crossing the Drake Passage, the Antarctic adventure truly begins. During the day, Zodiac boats take passengers ashore at different locations along the Peninsula, while the expedition ship continues sailing towards new places to explore.
Along the way, you may encounter:
Penguins, Whales, Seals, Seabirds, Huge icebergs, Glaciers and snow-covered mountains
Classic expeditions usually last between 9 days and 3 weeks, depending on the itinerary, ship, and program selected.
What should you consider before traveling?
It is recommended to book well in advance, have appropriate travel insurance, and bring clothing suitable for extreme and changing weather conditions.
We also recommend arriving in Ushuaia at least one day before your departure. This allows you to travel without rushing, plan for possible flight delays, and have time for any last-minute shopping or preparations.
Although the port is located in the city center, access for embarkation is restricted to authorized vehicles. If you are traveling with a lot of luggage, you can arrange a private transfer to the port and start your expedition comfortably and stress-free.
